Garage Door Sensor Troubleshooting Guide
When a garage door opens but will not close, photo-eye sensors are one possible cause. Clear the opening, clean both lenses gently, check that the units face each other and remain firmly mounted, then observe their indicator lights. Never tape, hold, rewire, or bypass a sensor to force normal closing.

What the photo-eyes are designed to do
Photo-eye sensors create a beam across the bottom of the garage-door opening. If the beam is interrupted or the control system cannot confirm it, the opener may refuse automatic closing or reverse the door. Sensor behavior varies by manufacturer, so indicator colors and blink patterns should be checked against the correct manual.
Start with the physical opening
Move boxes, tools, bicycles, leaves, toys, and vehicle parts away from the beam path. Trim or reposition objects that move into the path, but do not relocate the sensors without proper installation. Wipe lenses with a clean soft cloth. Confirm that both brackets are secure rather than loosely hanging or vibrating.
Bright sunlight can sometimes coincide with sensor trouble, especially when it strikes one lens directly, but do not assume sunlight is the only cause. Alignment, wiring, bracket movement, lens condition, and control logic must still be evaluated.
Read the behavior, not just the light color
Record which sensor light is on, off, flickering, or blinking; whether pressing and holding the wall button changes behavior; whether the door reverses immediately or near the floor; and whether the problem is constant or time-specific. Do not use a hold-to-close behavior as a permanent workaround.
Check visible wiring safely
From the floor, look for a loose low-voltage wire, staple damage, pet chewing, lawn-tool impact, corrosion, or a connector pulled from the sensor. Do not open the motor housing or handle mains-voltage wiring. A sensor with correct alignment but no reliable signal may have wiring, sensor, board, or compatibility issues.
When the problem may not be the sensors
A door can reverse because it contacts the floor too early, binds in the tracks, has incorrect travel or force settings, encounters an obstruction, or has a mechanical balance issue. If both sensor lights appear normal but the door still reverses, request a complete door-and-opener inspection rather than replacing sensors by guess.

Conditions that can imitate a sensor failure
Bright sunlight, condensation, dust, a shifted bracket, a pinched low-voltage wire, floor vibration, or an object near the opening can change how the photo-eye system behaves. Record whether the indicator lights are steady, blinking, or dark and whether the problem occurs at a particular time of day. Do not tape, bypass, relocate, or hold a control to defeat a safety feature.
If cleaning an accessible lens and removing an obvious obstruction does not restore normal operation, leave alignment and wiring diagnosis to a qualified provider. A door that closes only while the wall button is continuously held should be treated as a safety-system warning, not a normal operating method.
